Bangladesh has reaffirmed its strong commitment to reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries by 50 percent by 2030. The pledge was made by Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Sheikh Robiul Alam, who highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety through legal reforms, technology, and coordinated action.
According to a press release received in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 21), the Adviser made the remarks while addressing the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Road Safety at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday.
In his speech, Sheikh Robiul Alam said Bangladesh is implementing a range of legal, policy, and technology-based initiatives in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
He noted that the government is expanding Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based speed enforcement systems, improving post-crash emergency response services, and implementing targeted safety measures on highways, particularly to enhance pedestrian safety.
The Adviser also said that, following the Safe System Approach and international best practices, the government is committed to finalizing, approving, and enacting a comprehensive Road Safety Act by December 2027.
Describing road safety as a national political priority, Sheikh Robiul Alam emphasized that achieving the 2030 targets will require strong political commitment, effective partnerships, and shared responsibility among all stakeholders. He also reaffirmed Bangladesh's determination to work closely with the international community to build a safer, more sustainable, and inclusive road transport system for all road users.
The press release also stated that Sheikh Robiul Alam is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the UN High-Level Meeting on Road Safety. Other members of the delegation include Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division; Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations; and Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan, Project Director of the Bangladesh Road Safety Project.
On Tuesday, the Adviser is also scheduled to serve as Co-Chair of a side event titled "Strengthening Multisectoral Coordination for Road Safety: Sharing Best Practices and Experiences from Countries that Have Successfully Reduced Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries," to be held at the UN Headquarters.
